Here's the Michael Jackson tribute that I mention below. Any gamers and/or Michael Jackson fans...or really just fans of cool things should take a look.

| VIDEOGAMES LIVE! |
[Jul. 13th, 2009|11:10 am] |
As part of a birthday celebration, Rach got me tickets to Video Games Live!, which is an evening of videogame music performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Pittsburgh's Mendhelson (not spelled correctly) Choir. The following pictures were all taken with a DSi, which has no flash and was not intended to be used in such a way.

The doors opened at least an hour before the event for mingling, photos and a costume contest.

Here is a blurry picture of Link and Zelda. There were lots of Links and Zeldas.

Here are a lot of Links and Zeldas posing together. One interesting thing I noticed was that a lot of women were dressed up as Link, which I interpret as evidence of his universal accessibility. Nintendo has been pretty good about that sort of thing (they were the first to get boys to play as a heroic female character with Metroid).

Rach and I pre-show.

Rach out in the courtyard, pre-show.

Some dude dressed up as the guy from God of War.

Before the concert, there was a tribute to Michael Jackson's videogame ("Moonwalker"). It was very good, and I suggest you try to find it on youtube somewhere. Basically they inserted Jackson's game avatar into other popular games in clever ways.

ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!

Before the encore, the guy had everyone hold up their cell phones, DSs, PSPs and one guy in the audience held up an entire laptop.
Other notable events: a live-action Space Invaders game in which an audience member's movements were tracked and related in the game. That is, the person ran back and forth across the stage to position the ship and pressed a button to fire. |

Watch this clip...if you want a kinda' dirty feeling that will stay with you for the rest of the day. This is what I imagine the secret prisons run by the US are like. Remember back when cartoons were considered a medium that prolonged innocence?
And, yes, that is David Wain as the voice of the warden.

| The Flaming Lips performing Madonna's "Borderline." |
[Apr. 8th, 2009|11:28 pm] |
One of Rachel's favorite songs (she cried when Madonna performed it when we saw her at Madison Square...she'll say she didn't, but she totally did).
One of my favorite bands.
Finally, some common ground.

Has anyone ever found a message in their livejournal inbox that simply reads: (You are not authorized to view this entry)?
What does this mean and who IS authorized to read it?
Livejournal is getting weird. Perhaps it's time to permanantly migrate somewhere else.

| Wikipedia Obituary |
[Apr. 6th, 2009|09:18 pm] |
Okay, so on this episode of House, the character Lawrence Kutner dies and it's pretty dramatic. And it's done in such a way, that it reminds me of the episodes of 8 Simple Rules after John Ritter dies, so I start to wonder if the actor Kal Penn had died and they worked it into the show as a tribute. So I czech his wikipedia page and refresh it a few times and sometimes it says he died on April 3...sometimes it says other days...sometimes it insists that he is still alive. I can only assume that Kal Penn IS still alive, but depending on when you czech his wiki, he's kind of oscillating back and forth.
Just keep that in mind next time you think about using wikipedia as a source for anything.
No real entry here. Just something I wanted to jot down. |

| Strange Friends |
[Apr. 1st, 2009|10:42 am] |
I had been friended by something called http://asofduvs.livejournal.com/ a while back (could have been months, weeks, days), but then it unfriended me as quietly as it had appeared. And now all of its entries have vanished (well, they still exist according to the user info, but I guess they're friends only). I never friended it back, but its entries were strange stories of someone overdosing on pills and some soap opera involving two guys. It was kind of interesting to read, and it was neat to see someone using livejournal as a creative medium similar to what Quarterlife or Lonelygirl sought with youtube and social networking. But now it's gone.

| Lewis Black...Performance, Autographs, Photographs |
[Mar. 29th, 2009|01:42 am] |
Rach and I saw Lewis Black perform tonight at the Heinz Hall, and afterwards, we stuck around to meet him. He was very humble and cordial and posed for a lot of pictures with people (whether they bought anything or not). The performance was almost entirely new material. One part touched on earlier material, but he completely changed it around...so it was essentially an original show.
You're a good man, Mr. Black. A class act all around.

I might add more details tomorrow.

| Cook that pork nice and slow, baby...oh yeah.... |
[Mar. 22nd, 2009|07:57 pm] |
After much prodding from Rach, I finally took our crock pot (I prefer the term "slow cooker") out for a maiden voyage. In honor of the event, I decided to do a tribute to one of our favorite meals: pulled-pork barbeque sandwiches, macaroni and cheese and baked beans from Dinosaur BBQ. Mine wasn't nearly as good as Dinosaur BBQ, but it turned out pretty well. The whole process took about 10 hours.
Does anyone know any good ways to shred pork off of a roast? I ended up covered in it and felt very much like a butcher.

| It was a good day.... |
[Mar. 22nd, 2009|12:37 am] |
Today was a pretty good day. Rach and I got up, put on matching cowboy-style shirts and went to a cool store called Who New? They specialize in authentic mid-century modern furniture -- that is, stuff you might find on the set of Mad Men or some sort of "mod" film from the 50s or 60s. I want an entire 1960s office set - including the wood-paneled desktop radio/lamp. Rach got something called a "shimmering tree." It's hard to describe, but I'll post a picture tomorrow. Perhaps she will write about its personal significance to her in her journal. Then we went to Bob Evans where we has some incredibly underwhelming food. The table behind us made a terrible mess like I had never seen in a restaurant before -- a total disaster that required another server to come help clean it up. There was food and shredded paper all over the floor. I wish I had taken a picture. But here is the interesting thing: everyone else in the section saw what had happened and made an extra effort to clean their table and tip in a manner that countered the bastards. One guy pulled the server aside and told her that she shouldn't have to deal with that sort of thing. I think the group had tipped about 15 bucks for a bill that was over 100 (Rach can fill in the actual figures). From a sociological standpoint, it was neat to see so many people from different ages, genders and backgrounds feel the same group-hatred for these people who violated a social code. Just wanted to log a good day in the books as they seem to be somewhat rare these days. Dobler.

| This is a test. |
[Mar. 20th, 2009|10:17 pm] |
Rach and I are watching yet another Keith Olberman cameo on the soup (not as funny as the Mad Men and Breaking Bad cameos), and I'm testing this LiveJournal app. Here's a test picture:
I hope it works okay. Dobler. Posted via LiveJournal.app. |

| Rachel and the Brothers Regan |
[Mar. 16th, 2009|11:23 pm] |
Rach had gotten us tickets to see Brian Regan last night at the Palace in Greensburg, and it was a very good show. The show consisted of almost entirely new material (and I've seen his Comedy Central Presents, I Walked on the Moon and his latest, the Epitome of Hyperbole). The material that was recycled was tweaked and added to. After seeing him live, he has gone from being "a pretty funny guy" to being "a solid performer of the comedic arts." He's definitely got some showmanship and dedication to his craft. His brother Dennis Regan opened the show, and he was very funny as well. His material wasn't as polished, but his delivery and general topic selection was very similar to Brian's (in subject matter and quality).
But then Rach and I stuck around and snuck back into the theater to meet them, and we had these photos taken. We talked with them for a while, and were impressed that Brian remembered (unprompted) that the Byham Theater was in Pittsburgh. They were both very cool about us hassling them after the show. As we were leaving we noticed a tour bus with a throng of people around it and it occurred to us that we were SUPPOSED to have waited out there with the masses instead of sneaking back into the theater. Oops. Oh well. They tolerated us and we got some good pictures and memories.
And yes...I dressed like him on purpose. I was disappointed to find that I was the only one who had done so.

| Happy Thanksgiving! |
[Nov. 27th, 2008|08:06 am] |
I finally found a video that explains why the pilgrims had buckles on their hats. It's very informative. [It's also not appropriate to view when the family is visiting, if you understand the vernacular].
So why DID they have buckles on their hats, anyway?
